The SWAT program is designed to help low income families become self-sufficient. This is achieved by offering free certification and licensure training. To qualify families must either:
be on or eligible for Food Stamps, and/or
be on or eligible for TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families – this is cash-money welfare. The school district definition of TANF
does not apply),
and/or
be a blood related non-custodial parent that can prove so, and makes less than $32,000/year.
Funding for SWAT is made available through the Texas Workforce Commission in partnership with Blinn College and Region VI Education Service Center. Eligible participants receive job training (through Region VI) and supportive services (through Project Unity). Supportive services through Project Unity's case management division include (but are not limited to) childcare and transportation while participants are attending job training classes.
