Special Health Services
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services HIV/STD program annual report, there were 62,714 people living with HIV/AIDS in Texas in 2007, a 30% increase from people living with HIV/AIDS in 2003.
One in 378 Texans... One in 112 African American Texans...One in 498 White Texans...One in 565 Hispanic Texans...is living with HIV/AIDS.

In 1985, scientists discovered the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is a virus that is transmitted from person to person through the exchange of body fluids such as blood, semen, breast milk and vaginal secretions. As HIV reproduces, it damages the body's immune system and the body becomes susceptible to illness and infection. There is no known cure for HIV infection. There are medications today that can greatly enhance the quality of life for persons living with HIV/AIDS; however as with many health regimens, side effects and complex living situations often prevent persons living with HIV/AIDS from staying healthy.
